Dear students:

Welcome to the first course in English Phonetics at your Masters course in Translation and Interpretation, UBA. On this page you'll find all the files you need. Since phonetics & phonology are concerned with both your perceptual and productive skills, we'll try to follow a multisensorial approach. As a result, you'll be working with reading materials, audio and video files.

CLASSWORK
Each class the teacher will introduce new content and will take up previously taught concepts. The aim of the course is to enhance the students' listening comprehension and pronunciation skills. Therefore, the theory discussed in class aims at helping students get a better grasp of the "backstage" of pronunciation work. Students should bring the material to class, as we'll be constantly using it both to illustrate points and to get oral practice. Since oral practice is the aim, students should work intensively on each text for imitation from one session to the next.

EVALUATION
The last two classes are going to be integrative. On the last but one, the teachers and students will work on the mock exams, which are modelled after the final examination. The final examination will take place on the 8th class. It will consist of:
  1. The student chooses a dialogue from the set dealt in class to read aloud.
  2. The teacher chooses a dialogue from the set dealt in class to read aloud.
  3. The student reads a new text aloud.
  4. The student discusses phonological and phonetic features of the new text.
